Maria Young, LPN, Memory Care Manager for The Sanctuary at West St. Paul ensures that each Memory Care resident here enjoys an engaged, purposeful and secure lifestyle. Young recently joined The Sanctuary team and brings 20 years of skilled nursing experience, mostly caring for those with dementia, to her role.
She oversees the day-to-day operations of The Sanctuary’s Memory Care program, which features 24 apartment homes and programs specially designed for those with Alzheimer’s or other memory related diseases.
Lead by Young, Sanctuary supportive partners focus on igniting the spirits of those in their care. They focus on the social, emotional and spiritual well-being of each resident and, in doing so, strive to reverse the symptoms of dementia through a process called rementia.
“It is amazing to see rementia happen by creating an environment of focused attention of unconditional love and belief in a person’s abilities,” says Young. “This allows for the reigniting of a person’s spirit and restoration of dormant abilities. A person may speak after not speaking for a year or engage in full conversation after only using words and gestures. The ‘spark’ is reignited.”
Young of Bloomington, MN, earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Healthcare Management from the Minnesota School of Business-Brooklyn Center and is enrolled in a master’s program in Health and Human Services Administration at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota School of Graduate Studies and will graduate this December.
Prior to joining The Sanctuary team, Young was most recently Director of Care Management for HealthEZ and before that she held leadership roles with North Ridge Health and Rehab, Univita Health and MN Masonic Home Northridge.
“I am proud of the progressive approach our team takes to find the unique way to reignite the spark of each resident and to help those with memory care impairment reach their full potential,” says Young.
